The Invention of Nothing

Nothing had to be invented. Babylonian and Maya scribes used placeholders, but treating emptiness as a number, something to add, subtract and multiply, crystallized in India: place-value numerals with zero from the early centuries CE, and around 628 Brahmagupta's explicit rules for calculating with it. Radiocarbon dating of the Bakhshali manuscript, with its small round zero-dots, ignited a lively dispute about just how early the written zero goes.

Why it matters

Zero completed the ten digits with which almost all humanity now calculates, a notation so efficient it conquered the world twice, through Arabic scholars and then reluctant Europe, which resisted the 'infidel' numeral for centuries. Every equation of physics, every line of code, every ledger runs on the acceptance that nothing is a quantity. It is the quietest revolution on this timeline.

Dating & uncertaintyDisputed

Zero grew in stages across Indian mathematics: place-value notation with a zero mark appears in inscriptions and texts from the early centuries CE, and Brahmagupta, around 628, first stated rules for zero as a number in its own right. The Bakhshali manuscript's famous dot was radiocarbon dated to the third or fourth century, but specialists dispute both the dating's interpretation and what the dot there does.
