The Wheel

The wheel arrives startlingly late: a hundred thousand years after ochre workshops, five thousand after farming. Then, in the middle of the fourth millennium BCE, wheels and wheeled vehicles appear almost at once in several regions, the Carpathian basin, the steppe, Mesopotamia, as if an idea whose time had come was invented repeatedly. Oxen-drawn wagons made whole households mobile on the grasslands, and a machine part was born that industry still cannot do without.

Why it matters

The wheel is the textbook invention, and its actual history corrects the textbook twice: it was not obvious, arriving only when carpentry, draft animals and flat country aligned, and it was not one genius's gift, emerging in parallel and spreading by usefulness. Egypt raised pyramids without it; whole American civilizations flourished knowing it only in toys. Technologies are answers to circumstances, not stations on a single track.

Dating & uncertainty

Wheels and wagons appear more or less simultaneously across several regions in the fourth millennium BCE, from the Carpathian basin to Mesopotamia and the steppe, and the evidence does not crown a single inventor; one argument even roots the idea in Carpathian copper mines, where ore carts would have paid for themselves. The schoolbook certainty that everything began in Mesopotamia does not survive the finds.
