A Milkmaid’s Immunity, Bottled

Country lore said milkmaids who had caught mild cowpox never took smallpox. In 1796 Edward Jenner tested it: matter from a milkmaid's sore, inoculated into a boy, protected him from deliberate smallpox exposure. Vaccination spread worldwide within years, displacing the riskier practice of variolation; which virus Jenner's vaccine actually contained is still being untangled from historical vaccine stocks.

Why it matters

For the first time a disease could be prevented systematically, at scale, without first suffering it. Vaccination founded immunology, added decades to human life expectancy, and made conceivable what was later achieved for smallpox: extinction of a human disease. It began not in a laboratory but in careful attention to what farm workers already knew.

Dating & uncertainty

Jenner's first vaccination is dated to May 1796. He was not the first to try cowpox inoculation, and what virus his vaccine actually contained is a genuine puzzle: genomic work on historical vaccine stocks points to vaccinia or horsepox-like viruses rather than true cowpox.
