For all prior history, information travelled at the speed of its carrier: a rider, a ship, a pigeon. The telegraph cut the cord, and the 1866 transatlantic cable joined the New York and Liverpool cotton markets almost in real time. The economics are measured like an experiment: the price difference between the two shores fell and stopped swinging, trade grew and responded faster to demand, with efficiency gains estimated near 8 percent of export value.

Why it matters

This is the moment the planet acquired a nervous system, and the first proof that information itself, separate from goods, was worth fortunes. Markets, news and diplomacy all began operating at electric speed while everything physical still moved by steam. Every later acceleration, telephone, internet, trading algorithms, replays this event; economists still study the cable to know what removing an information friction is worth.

Dating & uncertainty

Land telegraphy spread from the 1840s; 1866 marks the durable transatlantic cable, when news between the world's two largest markets went from ten days by ship to a day. The measured effects concern trade: price gaps between New York and Liverpool shrank and steadied, exports rose, and a reanalysis of the American rollout argues the distortions removed were about half as large as first estimated.
