The Oldest Story Ever Painted

On the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, a painted panel shows human-like figures interacting with a wild pig; calcite grown over the pigment dates the scene to at least 51,200 years, the oldest known figurative art and the oldest depicted story. A neighbouring cave holds a hunting scene of part-human, part-animal figures at least 50,200 years old. Europe's celebrated caves came later.

Why it matters

Art history no longer begins in Europe. The oldest images we have are Indonesian, on the far side of the sea crossings, which implies image-making travelled in the minds of the migrants rather than being invented at journey's end. And the very first known paintings already tell a story with composite beings in it: imagination arrives on the wall fully formed, or the earlier chapters simply have not survived.

Dating & uncertainty

These are minimum ages: uranium-series dating of the calcite that grew over the paint says the art beneath is at least 53,500 +/- 2,300 years old at Leang Karampuang, hence painted 51,200 years ago at the latest. How much earlier the brush actually passed, no method can yet say.
