The Sahara Dries Out

For its first several thousand years the Holocene Sahara was a savanna of lakes, herders and hippopotamus. As Earth's slow orbital wobble weakened the monsoon, the green Sahara collapsed around 5,500 years ago, abruptly in the offshore dust record, over about a millennium and with flickering droughts in East African lake records. Its people withdrew to the Nile, the Sahel and the oases.
Why it matters
A small, gradual nudge in sunlight produced a fast, vast collapse: the green Sahara is the classic warning that climate has thresholds, not just trends. It is also written into human history, as refugees from the drying grasslands concentrated along the Nile in the very centuries when Egyptian civilization crystallized. The desert that now defines Africa's north is younger than farming.
Dating & uncertainty
Marine dust records off Mauritania show an abrupt end near 5,500 years ago; land records spread the transition over a millennium, ending earlier in the north and east than the south and west, with decades-long droughts flickering through it. Abrupt or gradual is partly a question of where you stand.
