In 1973, Stanley Cohen and Herbert Boyer joined DNA from different organisms and grew the hybrid in bacteria: genes had become movable parts. The power frightened its own inventors; experiments were paused, and the 1975 Asilomar conference drafted the safety rules under which the work resumed. Within a few years the technique had a company, Genentech, and a product, human insulin grown in microbes, and the biotechnology industry existed.
Why it matters
Every engineered medicine, crop and industrial microbe descends from this splice, and so does the way society governs biology: Asilomar became the template, cited and contested, for scientists regulating their own inventions in public. Dating & uncertainty
Cohen and Boyer's recombinant technique dates to 1973, with the decisive cloning experiment run with John Morrow; the field's self-imposed pause and the Asilomar conference on its risks followed in 1975. Historians now read Asilomar less as a moment of resolved consensus than as the start of a long negotiation between safety, regulation and commerce that produced the biotechnology industry.
