In 1949 Willard Libby and James Arnold showed that the faint radioactivity of carbon-14, absorbed by every living thing and decaying after death at a known rate, could date organic remains, verifying the method against Egyptian samples of known age. Archaeology gained an absolute clock reaching back fifty thousand years; decades of calibration work have since corrected the clock's natural drift.

Why it matters

Before radiocarbon, prehistory floated: sequences without years, chronologies argued from pottery styles. This single method pinned the world's sites to a common timescale and demolished cherished diffusion theories overnight. Most dates on this very timeline, from the last Neanderthals to the first farmers, are radiocarbon dates; the tool itself is part of the human story it measures.

Dating & uncertainty

The method's founding papers appeared in 1949, checked against Egyptian objects of known age. The raw clock needs calibration, since atmospheric radiocarbon has wandered, and successive calibration curves, built from tree rings and other archives, are what turn measurements into calendar dates; half the dates in this corpus lean on them.
