Mountains Made to Order

In roughly eight decades of the twenty-sixth century BCE, Egypt quarried, moved and set some ten million tonnes of stone into the three pyramids of Giza, Khufu's alone rising 146 metres, the tallest building on Earth for nearly four millennia. Around the monuments archaeology finds the machine that made them: workers' towns, bakeries, ration lists, harbours receiving stone and timber from hundreds of kilometres away.
Why it matters
A pyramid is administration made visible. Feeding, housing and directing tens of thousands of rotating labourers, decade after decade, is the real wonder; the geometry is what an early state could do once writing, taxation and logistics existed. They remain the clearest statement in stone of what concentrated organization, and concentrated power over people's labour, meant from the beginning.
Dating & uncertainty
Egyptian historical chronology floats on reign lengths; radiocarbon modelling anchors it, placing Djoser's accession at 2691 to 2625 BCE and Khufu's Great Pyramid conventionally near 2560 BCE. Recent measurement has settled the long High-versus-Low chronology dispute for the Old Kingdom in favour of the older readings.
