Footprints on the Moon

On 20 July 1969, the lunar module of Apollo 11 landed on the Moon, and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on its surface while Michael Collins kept the command module in orbit. They spent about two and a half hours outside, collected 21.5 kilograms of rock, and left instruments and their footprints behind. Twelve years separated this walk from the first artificial satellite; the whole of spaceflight fits inside a single human lifetime.

Why it matters

Measured against this timeline, the landing is the sharpest picture of the acceleration: a species that spent 290,000 years as foragers stood on another world within seven decades of learning to fly. On the compressed day shown by the card's clock, the Moon walk happens in the final quarter-minute before midnight. It is also, so far, the farthest any human body has been from the ground on which every other event here took place.
