Money Is Minted
~2,600 years ago
History · Antiquity · Holocene · Meghalayan
In the kingdom of Lydia, in western Anatolia, around the mid-seventh century BCE, someone first struck lumps of electrum with an official stamp: value guaranteed by the issuer, circulating by denomination rather than weight. Within a couple of generations dozens of Greek cities were minting, silver replaced the odd gold-silver alloy, and coinage was entangled in every social change of the archaic age, from law codes to markets to mercenaries' wages.
Why it matters
The coin made value portable, countable, anonymous and stateable: a technology of trust stamped in metal, and every currency since, down to the digital, keeps its logic of guaranteed tokens. Historians debate whether coinage created markets or markets demanded coinage, but not its reach; few objects in this timeline are so small and so consequential. Money's whole later history, from Potosí's silver to the phone in a Kenyan pocket, starts at this mint.
Dating & uncertainty
The first coins were struck in Lydia and Ionia around the mid-seventh century BCE, in electrum, a local gold-silver alloy; why that awkward metal was chosen is still argued, with recent work connecting coinage to the shift from gift exchange to market exchange in a mercenary-filled age. Croesus then minted gold and silver separately, the reform that spread coinage worldwide.
