The Maya Cities Empty

Between about 750 and 950 CE, the dynasties of the Maya lowlands stopped raising dated monuments, the great cities of the south emptied, and the region lost much of its population. The sky kept the receipts: isotopes in lake gypsum from Chichancanab show annual rainfall cut by roughly half during the worst droughts, and a precisely dated Belize stalagmite shows the rains not only failing but becoming unpredictable from year to year, between 700 and 800 CE.
Why it matters
Maya civilization did not vanish, the people and their languages are still there, but its political order dissolved, and the case has become the reference test for how climate stresses a society. The newest lesson is subtle: farmers can adapt to less rain, but not easily to rain they cannot forecast. Variance, not just scarcity, breaks systems, a finding with an obvious echo today.

The disintegration of Classic Maya political institutions spans roughly 750 to 950 CE; the anchor sits in its midst. The droughts are now quantified from lake gypsum and cave deposits: annual rainfall down by around 40 to 54 percent, with peaks near 70, and a Belize stalagmite adds that year-to-year predictability of the rains decayed as well.
