The First Named Pandemic

In 541 CE, plague entered the Roman world through Egyptian ports, the opening of two centuries of recurring waves. For 1,400 years its cause was conjecture; then DNA pulled from sixth-century teeth identified Yersinia pestis, and genomes from Bavaria to Britain revealed an already diversifying bacterium, on a lineage separate from the later Black Death, recently traced near the pandemic's Mediterranean epicentre.
Why it matters
This is where pathogen palaeogenomics rewrote history: an ancient whodunit closed by sequencing the killer itself from skeletons. The two great plague pandemics turn out to be independent spillovers from wild rodents, a warning with a long fuse. How badly Justinian's plague broke its world, ending antiquity for some historians, barely a ripple for others, is the debate the genomes have reopened rather than settled.
Dating & uncertainty
The outbreak's start in 541 CE is historically documented; the pandemic recurred in waves until about 750. What ancient DNA settled is the cause, Yersinia pestis, and its independence: the Justinianic lineage and the Black Death's emerged separately from rodent reservoirs. Its true death toll remains vigorously debated.
