On 25 July 1978, Louise Brown became the first human conceived outside a body: an egg fertilized in a dish by Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards after a decade of failed attempts and public hostility. The technique became routine, then an industry; millions of people now alive began as embryos in glass, and the laboratory window onto the human embryo opened genetic screening, egg freezing and, eventually, the ethical frontier that gene editing would test.
Why it matters
IVF separated conception from the body as the pill had separated sex from conception, completing a technological reordering of human reproduction within one generation. It rewrote what family can mean, for the infertile, for same-sex couples, for women deferring childbirth. And every embryo cultured since is also a scientific instrument: our species' earliest days became, for the first time, observable.

Louise Brown was born on 25 July 1978, after Steptoe and Edwards fertilized her mother's egg outside the body: the two-page Lancet letter announcing it is among medicine's shortest landmarks. Edwards received the Nobel Prize in 2010; the field's own forty-year retrospective charts the road from one birth to millions.
