The Horse Changes Pace

All modern domestic horses descend from one population bred on the steppes between the Volga and the Don, which swept across Eurasia from about 2200 BCE, replacing nearly every other horse lineage within centuries, together with spoke-wheeled chariots. Selection marked their genes for stronger backs and tamer tempers. An earlier domesticated line, milked and penned at Botai a millennium before, left almost no descendants.
Why it matters
Until the railway, nothing moved people, armies and news faster than this animal. The horse collapsed the steppe's distances, made the chariot and cavalry, and carried languages and empires; its genome records the price, a breeding funnel so narrow that stallion lineages fell to almost one. Few species have had their evolution so completely redirected to our purposes.
Dating & uncertaintyDisputed
Ancient genomes show the ancestors of all modern domestic horses, the DOM2 lineage from the Volga-Don steppes, expanding across Eurasia from about 2200 to 2000 BCE. Horses were milked and corralled at Botai around 3500 BCE, but that lineage died out; whether earlier peoples, including the Yamnaya, already rode remains contested, with recent work arguing management and riding began well before the DOM2 expansion.
