Within one generation, medicine changed its enemy: not miasmas or imbalances but organisms. Koch showed anthrax was a bacterium's doing in 1876, then in 1882 unveiled the tuberculosis bacillus, cause of the era's most relentless killer; his postulates, culture plates and stains gave the accusation a method. With Pasteur's rival school racing alongside, a golden age of bacteriology named the agents of cholera, plague and more within two decades.
Why it matters
Germ theory converted disease from fate into address: once a killer has a name and a habitat, water can be filtered, wounds disinfected, vaccines aimed, drugs designed. More lives hinge on this reframing than on perhaps any other scientific idea. Its arrival also demonstrates how truth wins in science, not by being announced but by carrying a toolkit that lets anyone verify and extend it.

The anchor is Koch's announcement, on 24 March 1882, of the tuberculosis bacillus, the era's greatest killer given a visible cause. The wider shift ran from the 1870s, with Koch's anthrax work and Pasteur's parallel campaigns, through the 1880s, as postulates, plates and stains turned 'bad air' into identified organisms, one disease at a time.
