Florisbad, a Skull of Disputed Age

A partial skull dug from a spring mound at Florisbad, South Africa, in 1932 wears a face caught between eras: heavier-browed than ours, flatter and broader than older species. A molar attributed to the same individual was dated directly, by electron spin resonance, to about 259,000 years. That would make Florisbad one of the oldest members of our lineage in southern Africa, if the tooth and the skull really belong together.

Why it matters

Florisbad shows how thin the record of our origins is: one skull, one tooth, and a date that hangs on their association. Some researchers read the fossil as an early Homo sapiens, others as a separate species, Homo helmei. Either way it anchors the southern end of the argument that our species was not born in one place, but assembled its features across the whole African continent.

Dating & uncertaintyDisputed

The 259,000 +/- 35,000 year age comes from electron spin resonance on a single molar found at the spring, not on the skull itself. A 2023 review of direct dating defends the estimate while acknowledging the challenge raised against it: if the tooth does not belong to the same individual as the skull, the skull's age is unconstrained. The species attribution, early Homo sapiens or Homo helmei, is argued as well.
