The Drought That Named an Age

Around 4,200 years ago, by many accounts, a great drying gripped lands from the Mediterranean to China, and its traces have been blamed for the fall of the Akkadian empire, Egypt's Old Kingdom and more. Stratigraphers made it official, splitting the late Holocene at this event to define the Meghalayan age. Yet the closer some records are read, the less global the drought looks: Asian cave archives show no coherent excursion, and doubts now reach the age boundary itself.

Why it matters

This is a rare case of a scientific boundary dispute happening in the open: the youngest slice of geologic time was pinned to a drought that may not have been one event at all. It is also a caution for every collapse story on this timeline: societies under stress fail for entangled reasons, and a synchronous-looking catastrophe can dissolve into regional bad centuries once the dating sharpens.

What is disputed is less the date than the event itself. One review reads a global dry, cool excursion around 4,200 years ago and endorses it as the divider of the late Holocene; a 2025 analysis of Asian cave records finds no coherent signal there and doubts the new geologic age it anchors; and in the Fertile Crescent, settlement data suggest societies were overreaching before the sky changed.
