In April 1953, Watson and Crick proposed that DNA is a double helix of paired bases, publishing alongside the King's College X-ray work of Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins whose data, notably Franklin's, made the model possible. The structure's two complementary strands immediately suggested how heredity copies itself.

Why it matters

Every fiche in this timeline that says 'ancient DNA' descends from this one insight: heredity is a text, written in an alphabet of four letters, that can be read. The double helix founded molecular biology, and its discovery story, brilliance, rivalry, and a woman's data used without her knowledge, has become science's own parable about how credit and knowledge actually move.

Dating & uncertainty

The double-helix papers appeared in Nature on 25 April 1953, Watson and Crick's model alongside the King's College X-ray evidence. The model rested critically on Rosalind Franklin's diffraction data, reaching Cambridge without her knowledge; she died in 1958, before the Nobel that could not include her.
