On the Origin of Species

In November 1859, a single sustained argument replaced the static, created world with a genealogical one: populations vary, variants leave unequal numbers of descendants, and given time this shapes species. Darwin's book convinced readers of evolution quickly; his specific engine, natural selection, took longer, and in the first years was more often borrowed as a cultural weapon than used as a research tool. It is the one theory under which everything on this timeline stands together.
Why it matters
Every fiche in this edition, from fossil skulls to ancient genomes, is downstream of this idea: that the living world has a history and that the history is legible. Darwin did it without knowing what heredity was, the mechanism sat unread in Mendel's peas, and the two halves only met in the twentieth century. Rarely has one book so completely reorganized what a species thinks it is.
Dating & uncertainty
The book appeared on 24 November 1859 and sold out at once. Historians still argue what, in it, was inevitable: evolution was discussed before Darwin and might have prevailed without him, but analysis of the alternatives concludes that natural selection itself had no forerunner or co-discoverer in the full sense, and might have waited long for another mind.
