Tiny discs ground from ostrich eggshell are humanity's oldest fashion that can be tracked: their styles match between eastern and southern Africa across three thousand kilometres, from about 50,000 to 33,000 years ago, the oldest known social network. Strontium isotopes in highland Lesotho show beads arriving from distant, drier country for tens of millennia: tokens of a gift-exchange insurance system like the hxaro partnerships Kalahari peoples keep today.

Why it matters

A bead is a promise wearing a costume: these networks buffered foragers against drought and hunger by binding distant groups in obligation, social security invented tens of millennia before the state. Their reach, and their climate-driven collapse, show that connection and disconnection have been shaping human genes and cultures since deep in the Pleistocene. The gift economy has a fossil record, and it is made of eggshell.

Dating & uncertainty

Comparing ostrich eggshell bead styles between eastern and southern Africa shows one connected fashion from about 50,000 to 33,000 years ago, then a break, plausibly when a shifting rain belt flooded the Zambezi corridor; the regions stayed apart until herders arrived after 2,000 years ago. In Lesotho, strontium isotopes show beads travelling far from their birthplaces for over 33,000 years.
